How To Swim

Born at Glasgow School of Art in 2000, How to Swim emerged as a bold experiment in blending diverse genres and intellectual flair. Architect-turned-frontman Gregor Barclay has been the band’s constant creative force, leading a perpetually evolving line-up that has swung from intimate quartets to orchestral eleven-piece ensembles. Over the years, their influences—spanning Bob Dylan, The Velvet Underground, and Pavement—have converged into something uniquely their own: an ambitious mix of lush arrangements, wry lyrics, and unflinching creativity.

Their discography is a chronicle of artistic risk-taking, from their early lo-fi 3 EPs to the intricate, brass-laden It Stings When I EP and the cinematic Niagarama, recorded with Croatia’s sea organ. Alongside these recordings, the band has shared stages with luminaries such as Wild Beasts and Kimya Dawson, graced T in the Park’s T-Break stage, and released music on Electric Honey Records—a launchpad for Belle and Sebastian and Biffy Clyro.

Now performing as a streamlined six-piece, How to Swim balances technical precision with raw emotional energy, embodying Glasgow’s creative spirit. Whether crafting theatrical musicals or reinventing live arrangements, their music is a journey for those who delight in the unexpected.
